Artistic touches galore!

I highly recommend choosing to stay in this clean and well-maintained cottage in the country. It truly is an artist’s retreat…so many unique collectibles and artistic touches inside and out. My 1 week stay was quiet, comfy, and cozy. Every aspect of what a guest would need or want was well thought out and provided. Owners were respectful of my privacy yet helpful with their delightful southern hospitality to ensure my needs were being met. I felt like I was at my own retreat spa. What a gift it was to wake up to country views…horses cantering around the pond, goats playing together like children, vegetable gardens beautifully designed and maintained, again with many artistic touches. That’s where I first learned about bottle trees! I can’t wait to return for another stay.

A Palpably Quiet Retreat in A Perfect Settng

As a traveling musician who is on the road 160 to 180 days each year, the prospect of spending more time away from home might not seem to be desirable. But this lovely little cottage, situated out in the country near Bayou Teche is a real sanctuary. There is something about the place that welcomes the spirit. This is evident in the attention to detail throughout the cottage: it is put together and maintained with great care. The proprietors have invested the cottage with a few small, well chosen pieces of folk art, details that are pleasing and personal. Should you remain through a Saturday morning, you are also just ten minutes from the best Cajun-Zydeco Breakfast in the world at Cafe Des Amis. This cottage could well be named ‘Petite Maison des Amis.’ I recommend a stay at Bonne Terre Cottage without reservation.

Perfect Home Base for Exploring Creole/Cajun Country’s Mysteries and Delights

While in Louisiana researching a novel-in-progress, I was lucky enough to enjoy the peace, comfort, and charm of Bonne Terre Cottage for three weeks. The soulful wood cottage, with its soaring ceiling, wide porches, and sleeping loft, perfectly fit my desire for a peaceful retreat in nature balanced with a vibrant nearby social scene that included Cafe Des Ami and its Zydeco breakfasts Saturday mornings. (Can you say Fun?) Folks, the place is magical: fireflies sparkling in tree tops, cicadas signaling evening, and in the morning, the red streak of cardinals’ flight across a pond to a wall of roses, just to give a hint of what you can expect. The hosts, an exceptionally wonderful couple, offer the right mix of southern hospitality and respectful privacy. For breakfast I ate eggs fresh from the owners’ hens, and dinners became feasts enhanced with herbs and veggies picked from the garden that day. Each evening, I looked forward to sitting on the wide porch writing in my notebooks and watching my hosts feed their horses and pygmy goats adjacent to my fenced yard. One evening, I went along to feed the cow, Matilda. I volunteered to feed the goldfish in a small pond with a fountain outside my door. A lovely five-acre pond is at the end of the road, and I walked there after dinner to watch the turtles, ducks, and pet my favorite neighborhood dog, Jade. As for the cottage itself, the photos do a great job of showing you its sweet, lovingly built space. The dressing room and its big mirror, book shelves, dresser and wardrobe are a bonus. I made some wonderful meals in the kitchen, got some of my best rest in the cozy nest-like bedroom, and practiced my zydeco dance moves in the livingroom. Writing this review makes me feel “homesick” for a place (and its people!) that held me with grace as I ventured into completely new territory, arriving alone and having never before visited Louisiana. If you, too, are lucky enough to stay at Bonne Terre Cottage, please let me know the highlights of your stay in this special place. I do plan to return, possibly this fall.

cottage heaven

I was a former renter of this property and absolutely loved every second of the two years that I lived here. It is now super cute and comfortable, fully stocked and furnished, and still as wonderful as when I permanently lived there. Even better maybe. I live in New Orleans now, and when I come back through always make a point to stay at the cottage. The owners are fabulous people and all the animals and other amenities make it a dream.

Perfect getaway in Cajun Country!

My husband and I stayed at Bonne Terre Cottage for part of our honeymoon in Louisiana, and it was just perfect. The cottage is cozy and secluded, and there are so many artistic and homey touches that make you feel very comfortable. We ate out while we were there, but you could easily use the well-stocked kitchen to cook meals if you wanted, and I was unable to identify any amenity from home that was missing from the cottage.

Waking up every morning in the loft makes you feel excited to greet the day, and watching the horses, goats, and chickens from the fantastic porch swing is so relaxing. And to top it all off, Jen provided us with a lovely little welcome basket that included fresh fruit, eggs and a sampler of cajun music! It was a truly magical stay, and we hope to make it back there again. If you’re going to be visiting the area, I can’t imagine why you’d stay anywhere else!

Outstanding Hospitality and Country Comfort

My wife and I spent 5 beautiful October days at Bonne Terre Cottage. We didn’t want to leave. The cottage is surrounded by leafy shade trees and small pastures. The cottage’s rustic exterior belies the very comfortable, tidy, and well appointed living spaces inside. The kitchen is well stocked with appliances and essentials – everything you need to just move in. We spent hours on the porches and hammock enjoying bluebirds and cardinals at the bird-bath and the horses, goats, and chickens in the adjacent pastures and my wife made full use of the claw-foot tub for her evening bubble-bath.

Our host Jen Mouton took excellent care of us – with first-hand recommendations for places to eat and things to do. Jen and her husband Todd know SW Louisiana very well, and are happy to share insights into the region’s Cajun food, music, and incredible culture.

Nearby attractions include Angel’s Whiskey River Landing near Henderson (for Zydeco on Sundays), Cafe des Amis (for music on Wednesday and Zydeco Breakfast on Saturday), Glenda’s Creole Cafe for delicious local-style plate lunches, and great antiquing in down town Breaux Bridge. It’s

20 minutes to Lafayette – with outstanding music, food, and culture – especially events including Festivals Acadiens et Créoles and Blackpot Festival held in the middle and end of October, respectively.

We travel to Louisiana from Alaska every fall for music and fun and will return to visit Bonne Terre Cottage soon.

Every Comfort of Home in a Peaceful Setting

My Husband and I stayed here for 4 nights while exploring Cajun country. What a delightful stay! The cottage has everything you could dream of needing, in a wonderful peaceful setting. Great covered porches overlook a private yard filled with plants and art, overlooking a pasture with horses and goats. Just minutes from everywhere you would want to see in the area. So quiet at night too!

Bathroom has a huge clawfoot soaking tub for relaxing bubble baths, yard has a hammock, picinic table and many chairs. Fully stocked kitchen, comfortable furniture, covered carport to pull your car under. Also we appreciated a large bowl of local citrus fruit, a cajun music CD, water, soda, snacks and yogurt in the frig, washer/dryer with detergent, and so much more. Great internet too! SO much nicer than a hotel — you will not regret staying here!

A Charming, Unique & Delightful Hideaway

Our experience in this beautiful cottage rates at the very top of all our “decompression” journeys. Bonne Terre comes complete with all the essentials for cooking your own meal. Or, if prefered, your gracious host will pass along the information for local establishments that include everything from grab-and-go delights to exquisite fine dining. We especially enjoyed the artistic touches the owner incorporated into her sanctuary. Bonne Terre truly made us feel at home while away from home. We plan on returning very soon.
Thank you so very much for your gracious hospitality, restful respite and thoughtful concern. You truly made us feel a part of the Bonne Terre Family.

Happy New Year & Hugs to You.

Peaceful & homey

This was easily the most relaxing weekend my husband and I had in

2011. We really needed it too…so grateful for some quality time together in such a peaceful environment! We were impressed by the care and attention to detail that Jen showed for her rental home and for us, as her guests. We appreciated all the little details…organic scented soaps, laundry detergent, fruit basket, fridge stocked with soft drinks and other basics, yummy Starbucks coffee…detailed written instructions on everything to do with the home/appliances/local attractions…even the light switches were labeled with Scrabble letters…fun and helpful.

After a warm welcome and tour of the home, we also appreciated having our privacy for the rest of the weekend…felt like we were on a retreat! I practically jumped out of bed each morning to enjoy coffee on the porch…listening to the wind chimes and birds chirping….watching the chickens putzing around the huge yard and the gorgeous view of the horses grazing. My favorite day was spent on the hammock reading for hours while my hubby enjoyed his football games.

The location was a convenient drive (10 min) to Breaux Bridge for a delicious dinner at Cafe des Amis and lunch at Poche’s. Good supermarket close by…nice to enjoy some simple meals at home after eating out so much in New Orleans. Thank you again Jen for the privilege of staying in your home!

Louisiana at its finest — a Southern Paradise

Oh, my.

We just returned from Bonne Terre Cottage. We felt as if we were leaving home when we pulled down the road.
It is the best kind of paradise. Quiet when we felt like holing up. Great music and food closeby when we wanted to go out and about.

Jen and Todd are wonderful and generous hosts. The cottage is filled with love, and we felt quite fortunate to be guests at Bonne Terre Cottage.

We would recommend it to anyone. Anyone.

Serengeti on the Bayou

Wonderful hosts for this Serengeti on the Bayou, replete with grazing farm animals and an abundance of colorful birds. The outdoor space is simply splendid, with a variety of lounging and eating options, both in the yard and on the porch. Fully equipped kitchen for in-home meal prep. Many touches of luxury in the bathroom of this cozy, cozy cottage. And when we arrived, absolutely everything was immaculate.

Louisiana Heavenly Stay

We were so thankful for our selection of the Bonne Terre Cottage in Breau Bridge. The owner is a delight and adds the merest touches. The cottage is lovely and comfy with a wonder full porch that wraps its way around the living room. This is truly serene and beautiful. A perfect location for traveling the area and coming home to comfort. The porch is perfect for reading, napping or eating or just vegetating and enjoying the many birds. We found tasty food at all of the restaurants where we dined. Plan to go back for a longer stay.

Pastoral and lovely cottage in the country

What a gem! I wanted to stay and live in the cottage forever! The owners are wonderful people who do everything possible to make your stay completely comfortable and worry free! Every amenity is thought of (even locally made soaps in the bath). The cottage is precious and pristine and full of natural light overlooking a beautiful pasture. Highly recommend it (even though I want it all to myself!!)

A place in the sun

It is entirely possible to arrive at Bonne Terre Cottage and spend your whole time there watching the chickens or goats or horses meander about their day. Or fall asleep reading a good book and listening to good local music while stretched out in a hammock under the shade of a tree while a gentle breeze rustles the leaves and keeps you cool. Why leave? Well possibly because there is so much to do in the area. Bonne Terre Cottage offers the best of both worlds. Everything you could possibly need is right there, yet you are just a short drive to some of the best music and food you could imagine. The owners are great people who have thought of every detail. We’ll be back.

Sweet Retreat to Create, Relax, and Just Be

When I first saw the “Louisiana Cajun Country Artists Retreat” listing in

2011, I sensed I’d found the perfect home base for my explorations into Cajun/Creole country. Then I arrived, and I knew I’d discovered a hidden gem. Since then, I’ve spent six blissful weeks at Bonne Terre Cottage. I cannot wait to return.

This place works its magic on you slowly, like a balmy Southern evening. You’re on the porch swing sipping something cool when you hear a zydeco tune on the cottage’s record player. You feel like dancing for the first time in a long time, and tapping down the stairs into the yard of clover, over there are fireflies pulsing in treetops. Cicadas keep rhythm, and it seems like all of creation is joining in the dance. You realize the knot in your neck has let go. Now, it’s time to take an herbal soak in the claw-foot tub, then head up to the sleeping loft and its fluffy bed. Hand-hewn wood cradles you in this cottage, lovingly built and cared for by its owners.

Many guests have praised the cottage’s generous amenities, spotless cleanliness, and its sparkling hosts, all of which contribute mightily to the spirit of the place. Comfort and beauty abound. Everywhere you look, there is evidence of the artists’ spirit, beginning with the cottage itself, a true one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted and tended with loving care. Musicians themselves, the owners are deeply immersed in the arts scene and the Cajun/Creole culture of the region (not to mention, they’re some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet!). The cottage is filled with the art, music, videos, writing, crafts, and photography of regional artists, and the collection is expanding to include the artistic works of cottage guests, as well.

Bonne Terre Cottage is set at the edge of the owners’ ten-acre farm, which includes horses, pygmy goats, chickens, goldfish in a sugar-kettle fountain, flocks of cardinals, bluebirds, owls, egrets, great blue heron, lizards, organic gardens, and pecan trees. The fridge and pantry are stocked with healthy goodies, too!

If you go, enjoy yourselves, and book early. Word is getting out about Bonne Terre Cottage!

Awesome, Awesome Place

I just returned from a little over two weeks in the cottage, and I really can’t say enough good things about the whole experience. I was working on a film about the area–beginning the editing process, actually–and being in such a pleasant, natural atmosphere helped that a lot.

The physical environment, definitely out in the country but close enough to Lafayette and other great food spots for an easy break anytime, was perfect for this kind of retreat, and the owners are truly wonderful people.

Kind of like the cottage itself, they’re near enough (and care enough) to be available, but are always respectful of your privacy. Honestly, I feel like we’re all friends now and I’ll definitely get back out there as soon as I can.

I’ve stayed in the area a lot over the past 5-6 years I’ve been working on this film, and nothing I’ve seen even begins to compare, especially if you want the experience of actually living in a place rather than just passing through. South Louisiana is a really special place, and I don’t know of any better way to begin exploring that. Thanks, you guys.

Southern Charm at Bonne Terre Cottage

I sit here contemplating any and all adjectives that I can include in this review. Most words don’t encompass the mood and tone of the setting at Bonne Terre Cottage. Completely welcomed is the initial sense as you arrive and walk in. All the natural wood, the original art pieces, the unique features, and the more than adequate amenities. And that’s just inside the cottage (which is very fresh and clean)! There’s not a single detail that was disregarded to ensure that you feel like you’re at home the whole stay. At every turn inside and out you’ll see something new and refreshing. Step outside and gain a fresh breath of air, rich colors, peaceful animals large and small, and nature at its best. Todd and Jen are the most generous hosts you could ask for. They truly make you feel like family from the moment you meet them. They are there any moment you need them but at a distance that makes you feel like you’re in the middle of peaceful woods. You have to include the surrounding yard and grounds as part of the livable area because there are so many places in both to sit or walk around and enjoy pure peace. And the surrounding area is full of wonderful food, antiques, shops, and more. This is the first of many, many more stays here in the future. A trip through South Louisiana and not taking a stop here is unforgivable.

My annual peaceful retreat

I have been fortunate that the Bonne Terre Cottage has been available to accommodate my week long stays for my past 3 trips to the Lafayette area. I look forward to my stay in this quiet artistic retreat as much as I look forward to enjoying southern hospitality. It is located conveniently to authentic, chef renowned, restaurants, quaint music venues hopping with local and more popular talents, native ecosystems just waiting to be explored…and then you get to come “home” to beautiful Bonne Terre Cottage. The proprietors have thought of everything you might need to make your stay comfy cozy and have accessorized it with local artist’s creations. I look forward to my annual peaceful retreat again next year and the year after that and the year after that…

Back to Nature

My husband and I were looking for a quiet, comfortable place to stay where we would soak in the southern Louisianna charm. We certainly found this at Bonne Terre Cottage. Everything from the horses and goats lazily grazing and napping in the pasture, to the zinnias growing on the side of the road made us feel that we were in God’s country. The cottage has all the comforts of home and the grounds are a beautiful slice of Eden. All the little extras made us feel so special. We took some time to explore the area and we fell in love with Breaux Bridge. We will be back – and we’ll stay longer next time!

Exceeds Expectations

Based on the previous reviews, we expected a very nice stay at Bonne Terre Cottage. We always carefully review properties and reviews before selecting a place to stay. The cottage and owner (more like hostess) Jen were everything represented and then some. From the time we arrived until the time we left, we marveled at the details in every nook and cranny – clearly a great source of pride for Jen and all who have been blessed to share in the peaceful surroundings. Nice touches everywhere – one not mentioned in previous reviews – old fashioned record player with plenty of vinyl to enjoy! Everything that one could need is there and very thoughtfully placed throughout the cottage – soaps, snacks, drinks, books, movies, etc. It was meticulously clean, inside and out. Southwest Louisiana is a great place – great people, great food – and Bonne Terre is a wonderful place to stay!

Bonne Terre Cottage – Beyond Words!

Our weekend at this lovely “Artists’ Retreat” was such a refreshing experience. The second we turned onto the quaint little road that lead to the cottage felt as though we were heading into the simplistic past. As we walked through the front door we quickly realized that everything was so well thought out, and most certainly had the touch of Jen and Todd’s true artists’ hearts. The kitchen is fully equipped, as well as every other need you may have throughout your stay. We woke up at the crack of dawn each day, not wanting to miss a single minute of our time in this little haven. We enjoyed our morning coffee sitting on the back porch and loved visiting with the animals around us. The horses and goats even made us feel special as they made their way to greet us. We loved watching the hummingbirds flitter right before us and the squirrels frolicking around. The enviornment is welcoming not only to us humans, but to all of God’s creation, just as it should be. Jen and Todd have thought of it all, even down to having binoculars available for you to enjoy bird watching, and a book of Louisiana birds at your fingertips to identify those birds. If you enjoy reading, just pick up one of the many books available and lay out on the hammock to just relax. If music is what you enjoy, kick back and listen to a great selection of records which you can play on the “record player”. What a special treat. We loved all of the special touches; far too many to list. The cottage is beautifully decorated with original art that warms the soul. We rarely left the cottage because our goals for the weekend were to have a time of rest, reflection, and prayer. We did, however, start and end our stay with visits to Cafe Des Amis in Beaux Bridge. I started off saying that the cottage had the feelings of the simplistic past. I realize we can’t, nor would we want to, live in that simplistic past, but Bonne Terre Cottage gives you the opportunity to become refreshed enough and energized enough to want to move forward with renewed vision and a revived spirit. Bonne Terre Cottage has now become my special place of choice that is void of all the busy noises and distractions of life. It would be amiss of me not to mention one very important fact. Our main goal was that God would meet us and speak to our hearts while at Bonne Terre Cottage. He obviously felt welcomed at the cottage, too, because He did meet us there:) A breath-taking place that anyone would love!

Writing Retreat

A little piece of paradise is nestled down Lawless Tauzin Road outside of Breaux Bridge. The drive is well worth it. Upon arrival you will see a sugar kettle pond of goldfish. The solid wooden cottage feels better than home. I settled right down with my laptop placed on the writing desk, looked out at the pond beyond where a great white egret was coming in for a landing. Then two hummingbirds fought over the red feeder. Nature, art, scents of lavender and wood all inspire good writing and a quiet retreat. Even though the cottage only sleeps two people, there are plenty of spaces for writers to spread out for a retreat, the inviting porch swing, the hanging hammock, the dining table nook, or nestle on the futon. The cottage is a poem, full of personal details that offer inspiration to the universal themes.

No need to go anywhere else – very relaxing

We just had the best long weekend away from hustle and bustle, enjoying the beautiful Bonne Terre Cottage. Jen was waiting for us when checking in on our first day, and she was the warmest and most welcoming host we have ever met. She gave us a tour of the cottage, explaining everything we needed to know, and if we still had questions, we were able to find answers in her neat binder, which was full of important information, showing that Jen really cares about her guests. Besides that, she was only a phone call away to assist us if needed.

We found the cottage exactly as pictured on the website, and when we entered the home, we were immediately captured by its personality, which we felt reflects the hosts at its best. There are little treasures everywhere throughout, inside and outside. Each must have its own story.

Spending time on the back porch was so relaxing, watching the horses and goats feed and getting frequent visits by the chickens, the little rooster and the cat. There are at least

20 bird feeders throughout the yard. We saw Carolina Wrens, Eastern Blue Birds, Hummingbirds, Sparrows, House Finches, Chickadees, Eastern Wood Pewees, and Eastern Phoebes enjoying the little paradise, probably watched by two Cooper Hawks circling over the property. We even discovered a tree frog hiding in the ashtray out on the deck.

You wouldn’t have to leave this place ever to be happy. The location is ideal for sightseeing as well as it is close to many interesting places. We especially enjoyed a 2-hour swamp tour on Lake Martin, which is only

20 minutes away. Don’t miss the sunset!

Our experience was better than we ever expected. You won’t be disappointed spending time at Bonne Terre Cottage.

Three Sister’s Getaway Weekend

We are three busy sisters that lead very full lives. We wanted to have a quiet, relaxing weekend with a little wine, laughs, and bonding! We heard about the little shops in Breaux Bridge, so decided to stay close to home. We knew that we wanted to be able to relax and maybe do a little cooking, so our search led us to Bonne Terre Cottage. This was the best experience ever. Jen is most accommodating and organized! It was a little slice of “heaven.” Every time we looked in another direction, we noticed another little “treasure”! It was the perfect spot for us and the cottage was great! I could live there and be very happy! The porch is awesome and the bathtub was wonderful! We could have spent the whole weekend in our pj’s! I would (and did) recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to “kick back” and relax! It was a sad moment on Sunday afternoon when we had to say our good-bye’s and head back to our busy lives. We are going to plan another weekend at Bonne Terre Cottage! It was definitely worth it! Jen Rocks!

Delightful!

My husband and I stayed at Bonne Terre for 3 nights following a Caribbean cruise. I can honestly say that our three days in this charming cottage were more delightful than the week on the ship. The cottage is just as it is presented, if not more charming. Morning coffee on the wide veranda watching the horses, goats and hens appear at the fence out of the fog was a treat. I felt like I’d known Jen all my life; she is that friendly and personable. She provided us with breakfast ingredients when we arrived and gave us fresh eggs when we left! She even provided us with a CD of Swamp Pop, Zydeco, and Cajun music which we played on our long drive to Illinois. Sightseeing highlights were the Evangeline State Park, a non-commercial and educational local swamp tour, Shadows-on-the-Tesche Plantation with original furnishings in New Iberia, and Avery Island with the Jungle Gardens. We want to return in the spring sometime to see the nesting Snowy Egrets there as well as spring blossoms. Camellias were blooming in December.

In addition we learned about growing rice, raising crawfish in the rice fields, and sugar cane harvesting in the area.

Get out of New Orleans and experience the friendliness and history of Bonne Terre and the Breaux Bridge area. You’ll love the food, too! Read Longfellow’s epic poem Evangeline before going, even if you read it in 8th grade like I did. You have a different perspective now.

Bonne Terre

On our leisurely trip across country from Maine to CA, we tried a last minute booking. Despite complications of departing visitors, cleaning, and the host’s flu, arrangements were made! My husband and I enjoyed a very quiet, comfortable three night stay in this sweet clean, well stocked cottage. Our host’s husband was very helpful and most welcoming, providing detailed information on great local tastes and sites. A delightful place to stay. Thank you!

A Louisiana haven!

I first chanced upon Bonne Terre’s website about 2 years ago and would often return to gaze longingly at the photos, re-read the gushing testimonials of its guests, and wonder if it could possibly be as idyllic as it looked.

This delightful haven, however, is every bit as peaceful and soul-restoring as it appears. Right from Jen’s warm welcome, we began to experience for ourselves just what all the fuss was about.

The amenities in this beautiful retreat are astonishing; I struggled to think of a single thing we might have needed during our stay that wasn’t already here. I’m a keen cook and a big fan of Cajun cuisine, and one of the many reasons I longed to stay here was to be able to shop for authentic, locally-produced ingredients (well, there ain’t a lot of Andouille or Boudin to be found in grey old London town!), cart it all back to my own Louisiana kitchen and cook up a storm! Let’s face it, we’ve all stayed in self-catering accommodation before where, unless you possessed MacGyver-like improvisational skills when faced with the usual motley array of ‘kitchen utensils’ you were more likely to end up in ER with a blunt corkscrew in your thigh than actually managing to enjoy that nice bottle of Pinot noir you picked up at the market. No such problems here; I lost count of the times I muttered, “Ooh, I could really do with a… oh, there’s one!”

The thoughtful provision didn’t end in the kitchen either; from gorgeous artisanal soaps and creams in the bathroom to the wide choice of music in the living room, every small pleasure one might want to indulge in when getting down to the serious business of relaxation has been anticipated and provided for. Want to soak in a claw-foot bathtub with a good book? Check. Want to dance to Clifton Chenier while preparing Jambalaya? Check. Want to review your stocks and shares portfolio using the cottage’s own wi-fi? Strange notion of a vacation you have, but, check!

I found it a gratifyingly immersive place to be too, surrounded by evidence of Louisiana’s rich cultural heritage; local artists’ work adorning the walls, Zydeco music on the turntable … all this, and we haven’t even ventured beyond the cottage gates yet!

It sounds amazing, but however eager you think you might be to leap in your car and go exploring the rest of Louisiana, every time you do so you will feel some reluctance to leave the embracing charms of Bonne Terre behind … this place has nestled deep in my heart and I cannot wait ‘til the day I return

Perfection, as advertised.

We use VRBO quite a bit and there is a large range in acurracy of the descriptions and reviews. Bonne Terre was exactly as advertised and reviewed. The setting was superb. The cottage was fabulous. We had absolutely everything we needed and so much more. My favorite moment had to be the first morning when I sat out on the porch in my pajamas drinking coffee and watching and listening to the birds. I could feel my body decompressing and relaxing. Thank you Jen for providing the perfect getaway. We will be back.

Louisiana Country Heaven!

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Jen and Todd’s little gem of a cottage for four blissful days. We were down for the Festival International in La Fayette and boy, did we need the quiet and serene surroundings of Bonne Terre after a day of festival revelry! Horses in the beautiful pasture, goats and chickens too – right outside our window. It couldn’t have been more relaxing – we felt our bones and muscles relax just minutes after we’d get “home” each afternoon. Jen was an incredible hostess (and very sweet!), and made sure we wanted for nothing. We will be back!

Buffalo, NY retired travelers

This property was wonderful. It was a whole house separated from the owner’s home by a large pasture with donkeys and chickens. It had originally been the owner’s home which they had built and lived in. It was beautifully maintained. The area was quiet and tranquil. We spent more time there than we usually do when we travel because we enjoyed the house so much. The owner was one of the most hospitable people we have ever met. She checked on us and our needs. She gave us suggestions for buying food or eating out. She had stocked the kitchen with many items for our stay including coffee, juice, water, and local bakery products. The washer and dryer were in the house and easy to use. We would go back again if we were in the area and would recommend it to others enthusiastically.

Great Place for Writing Retreat!

Some friends and I spent a delightful day at Bonne Terre Cottage for relaxation and writing. Having never been (though highly recommended), I hoped the cottage would live up to my expectations and let inspiration flow. I had no idea it would exceed my expectations.

Tucked in a quiet, country setting, I ensconced myself in the cozy loft with my laptop and a skylight view of sunshine, then wrote and wrote . . . and wrote. When a storm blew in, the pattering of rain only deepened my appreciation for this setting in which to find inspiration. After lunch and sharing pieces of our work with my writing friends, the day continued in quiet bliss, where I accomplished so much for my work in progress.

I could not describe this day as anything else but lovely. I didn’t want to leave, and I can’t wait to go back! 🙂

Bringing in a New Decade of My Life!

Life is grand and no better way to bring in a new decade of life but at Bonne Terre Cottage! My youngest daughter decided to give me a beautiful gift of serenity for my 60th Birthday. We arrived very early the day before my birthday and was welcomed with not only a beautiful fall day, but also the peace and serenity that Bonne Terre Cottage fills your heart with. It amazes me at the incredible details owners Jen and Todd lay out to make sure your stay is not just welcoming but makes you feel like you’ve been there for years. I love the feeling of “stepping back in time”. Hummingbirds were so plentiful, the squirrels frolicked in freedom, horses and goats so adorable to watch. It was like one big SIGH in my heart and a wonderful anticipation of waking up the following morning to a beautiful sunrise. As the sun rose the next morning I walked out on the porch and enjoyed morning coffee with my daughter. Sitting on the porch is like time standing still. When you walk away from the busy schedules that we all seem to get wrapped up in, it’s so nice to be able to have uninterrupted time to reflect on what “was” and what “is” and what “is to come” For me, visions were renewed, ideas confirmed, excitement rekindled for what’s to come. I am so grateful for the beautiful gift I received of my stay at the cottage, and grateful for people like Jen who pour heart and soul into the comforts and peace of the cottage. Going to the cottage is not your typical vacation where you return home NEEDING a vacation. Absolutely Fabulous!

Trying to find the words to describe our stay at Bonne Terre Cottage is easy. Idylic, peaceful, restful are all appropriate but staying here is the only way to experience and appreciate this lovely cottage in rural southwest Louisiana. Everything needed for self catering is present in the cottage and our kind and caring hosts went out of their way to make us feel at home. For us, this is the only way to experience Cajun Country and will be coming back again. In one word, faultless!

A Perfect Nature Place

Bonne Terre Cottage is the spot for people who love natural surroundings, a rural environment, birds, and a beautiful cottage not far from a big woods. From every window you can keep an eye on 17 birdfeeders in the lovely yard and horses and chickens nearby. On warm December days we ate all 3 meals on the fabulous porch with its comfortable furniture and dining table! The friendly and generous owner has coffee and treats in the frig for your arrival and local herbal soaps and lotions by that great clawfoot tub. She could not be more helpful and accommodating. For morning walks, the countryside beckons from the cottage carport. It was hard for us to head back North after our 3-week stay.

Peaceful cottage

This cottage is a peaceful retreat and it’s perfect for anyone who needs some quality time relaxing. The cottage is fully equiped and we even had gratefruit, yogourt and granola for breakfast. Jen is very warm and welcoming. We had a nice time and I wish we could have stayed longer. I would definitely stay there again.

Peaceful spot in Bayou Country

We really enjoyed our stay at Bonne Terre, even though the weather did not cooperate (record low temps). Jen & Todd were gracious hosts and we enjoyed life on their farm with the horses, goat and chickens. The cottage was quite comfortable and had everything we needed. The location was in the country, but easy driving distance to Lafayette and smaller towns in the area. Easy day-trip to the Baton Rouge area for plantation visits. Lots of great food and music in the area. We hope to return when the weather is warmer! Thanks, Jen!

A Little Slice of Heaven

What can I say. This was our second stay at Bonne Terre Cottage and it was as flawless as last time. Lovely cottage with everything one would need for self catering located in a peaceful country setting. Our hosts again more than went out of their way to make us feel at home. A great place to come back to after a day enjoying Cajun Country activities such as walking around or kayaking the swamp of Lake Martin or a night out dancing just to name a few. We have a ways to travel as we live in England, but will be back again. Thanks Jen and Todd!

Exceptional travel destination

Bonne Terre is an awesome destination. It is an excellent central location for day trips in the surrounding area. Additionally, the cottage itself contains a vast and diverse blend of resources to help a traveler become intimately acquainted with the area (history, natural history, music, arts, food). The cottage host was also very open to assist with any questions or directions that we needed.

I have stayed at many cottages over the past twenty years, both in the U.S. and in Europe, and Bonne Terre is the cleanest cottage I have ever stayed in. The owners take exceptional care of this cottage.

I was happy that the cottage was equipped with exclusively environmentally friendly cleaning products and laundry detergents. Also, as advertised, there was no sign of pets or smoking in the cottage (excellent for those with allergies).

The location is very picturesque, with lots of wildlife. Ideal for birdwatching.

A Wonderful Retreat

We recently spent 9 wonderful days at Bonne Terre. The cottage is lovely and so well furnished. The kitchen is fully stocked. Jen has thought of everything you could possibly need for a great visit. CD’s, books, and DVD’s are plentiful, but it was just fun to sit on the porch with a cup of hot tea and watch the chickens and horses in the back. Since my husband is from central Louisiana and I graduated from high school (eons ago!) in Breaux Bridge, we were already familiar with the area, but we still found plenty of things to do and people to see. Jen is a wonderful hostess. Even though she was quite sick while we were there, she was more concerned that we were having a good time and had everything we needed. (We did.) We are not artists, but this is truly a retreat. We’re already planning for our next visit. Thanks, Jen, for a wonderful week.

Bonne Terre – Main House

We’ll be back, over and over again!

Bonne Terre with its large and charming vintage Main House, and calming country setting has been the epitome of a winter getaway for us!

Complete with all the finer things furnished that are needed to make one’s visit as close to perfect as possible, the outdoors are just as incredible with barred owls in the woods, and fireflies at night! Miss Jen is the ultimate hostess, seeing to her guests’ needs at all times!

Breaux Bridge and Lafayette are not that far away, so dining and entertainment venues are at everyone’s beckoned call, or just relaxing “at home” is grand, too!

There really is something for everyone who chooses to experience this magnificent opportunity!

Very sincerely,

True Southern Hospitality!

When you turn onto Lawless Tauzin Road, your first sight will be tranquil oak trees draped with Spanish moss. The Bonne Terre main house sits back off of the road nestled in a grove of trees. The house itself is well adorned with everything a vacationer might need. If there’s anything you’ve forgotten or are missing, Jennifer is a quick phone call or text away, happy to help.

The house is a spacious two bedroom, two bath with a dining room and a kitchen pleasing to any home chef. The fridge was stocked with a breakfast items, half n half for our coffee and assorted soft drinks. The beds are comfy and towels are plush. The hardwood floors reminded me of my grandfather’s house, softly creaking as you walk….bringing back loving memories of years gone by. At the front of the house is a sun room with screened windows and a view of animals on the property: horses, goats, chickens and a cow. It’s such a peaceful place to sip your morning coffee (Jennifer brought us fresh coffee beans from a local shop) or afternoon glass of wine. The open back porch has a lovely morning breeze and there is a hammock, tire swing and traditional swing hanging from trees in the back yard.

We were lucky enough to have friends and family visit one night for dinner. We found everything we needed in the kitchen to cook a homemade meal and easily seated eight at the sprawling dining room table. The living room has cable TV and a nice selection of movies, a CD player with many local Cajun artists’ CDs and a Bluetooth speaker if you carry your own music on your phone. It’s evident that the Moutons are big music lovers and supporters of local artists. There’s even an upright piano in the house.

If you’re looking for a comfortable, peaceful getaway, this is the perfect spot. And your hostess couldn’t be any nicer.

Our only regret is we weren’t able to stay longer….but we sincerely look forward to returning.

Unbelievably appointed!

I’ve stayed in quite a few rentals found here on VRBO but I’ve never stayed somewhere where I truly felt like I was at a home. The house is filled with personal items, books, DVDs, music, etc… The kitchen has anything and everything you might need as it relates to tools, gadgets, appliances, etc…. If I’m being honest it has more in it than my own (seriously). And I can’t say enough good things about our hostess Jennifer. She greeted us upon arrival and contacted us multiple times during our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. Graciousness at it’s finest. Not a surprise in Louisiana but still to be applauded. Bonne Terre is truly a home away from home although home is never this peaceful.

Gorgeous getaway

This house is gorgeous and Jen has thought of everything. From the placement of furniture to make sure that each area is comfortable and welcoming to the amazingly well stocked kitchen with everything you’ll ever need to enjoy feasting during your stay and books, DVDs and anything you’d need to while away the hours relaxing. Her attention to detail extends well beyond the house to the entire property, which is beautiful. Jen is the ultimate hostess who believes in gracious living.

A great bridal shower venue!

The house and grounds provided a perfect back drop for an elegant bridal shower. Jen is so warm and welcoming. She has such a beautiful home that has been beautifully appointed with vintage antiques. This truly made a perfect back drop for our bridal shower. I was able to comfortably serve 35 – 40 people. The kitchen layout was open and had an island perfect for our mimosa bar. The refrigerator was large enough to keep everything cool until serving, including a 2 tier cake. Dining room area had large dinning table and side board perfect for all the food and deserts. This room also had a lovely fireplace which made a perfect back drop for pictures. The Bride and her guest loved the venue because it was so welcoming and tenderly cared for by Jen. Along with hosting the bridal shower, my mother and I also stayed two nights in the cottage. Both bedrooms were spacious and comfortable with some amazing views of the property. Thanks again for everything, Jen!

A Perfect Artist Retreat

A friend and I stayed for 3 days as an end of school art retreat. Jen is a perfect hostess. She checked with us everyday to see if we needed anything. The house was completely stocked with anything we needed. It was like being at home. The front porch was my favorite place to be and create art. The view of sweet Mathilda made it perfect!

I will definitely be going back! Thanks Jen!

Amazing destination for relaxing, great food, rest, and inspiration

My wife and I stayed for a weekend not too long ago and Bonne Terre Cottage is still on our minds. We found rest, relaxation, fellowship, and a rejuvenated spirit. The house is very spacious with many sitting areas. The bathrooms are very nice. Super clean house. Country-living landscape with several farm animals big and small seen in the short distance. The host, Jennifer Gray, is just about the sweetest person we have ever met. Super accommodating and more than willing to make sure our stay was the absolute best it could be. We definitely plan to make many more trips to Breaux Bridge and stay again. It’s a destination I very highly recommend.

VERY nice getaway for rest & relaxation

This was a quick getaway for our 16th wedding anniversary and we couldn’t have chosen a better place, or area, for a quiet place out in the country, but still close to the most amazing place in America for foodies like us! We decided against Hot Springs, AR, and decided to go south, instead. We had one very high expectation, though, and that was some good coffee, which was provided by Jen there at the house. We made a cup not long after arriving and used the handy milk frother. I sat down on the little sofa in the sunroom, took a sip and my cares immediately slipped away. The house was just beautiful, clean, & had plenty of room. The kitchen had everything we needed and I especially enjoyed the library of books. The local places we recommend, and enjoyed ourselves, are Joie de Vivre, Café des Amis, The Blue Dog Café, Prejean’s & Reve (since we needed to go there to purchase more of the delicious coffee Jen had introduced us to). We took a morning swamp tour on Sunday, had brunch afterwards in town, & took a long peaceful nap at the house before leaving town. Bliss. Jen was a remarkable host, very sweet & thoughtful. I can’t say enough how happy my husband & I are to have stumbled upon this quiet place to retreat to as often as we get the chance.
